Disney has announced that Academy Award winner Robert Downey Jr. will serve as the official godparent of the Disney Adventure, the newest and largest ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet. The announcement comes weeks before the ship’s maiden voyage from its home port in Singapore.

“Our new ship continues Disney Cruise Line’s tradition of bringing great stories to life at sea,” said Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences and incoming Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company. “We’re honored to have Robert Downey Jr., who helped shape some of Marvel’s most memorable stories, as the Disney Adventure’s godparent.”

Downey’s portrayal of Tony Stark / Iron Man helped launch and define the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which remains the highest-grossing film franchise in history. His run as the character concluded with Avengers: Endgame, which earned more than $2.79 billion worldwide. He was named a Disney Legend in 2019 and is set to return to the Marvel franchise as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, arriving in theaters Dec. 18.

“It’s hard to put into words how impressive the Adventure is,” Downey said. “Being named its godparent is a real honor. As the largest ship in the fleet, it deserves a proper blessing — I’ll do my best.”

The Disney Adventure features seven themed areas celebrating more than a century of Disney storytelling, including several Marvel-inspired experiences. At Marvel Landing on the top decks, guests can ride Tony Stark’s Ironcycle Test Run — the first roller coaster on a Disney Cruise Line ship and the longest of its kind at sea. In Disney Imagination Garden, the live show “Avengers Assemble!” brings Marvel heroes and villains together in a stunt-filled stage production. Young guests can also visit the Marvel WEB Workshop inside Disney’s Oceaneer Club to test new Super Hero suit prototypes and take part in interactive training simulations.

Beyond Marvel, the ship offers Disney’s signature cruise experience, including character meet-and-greets, Broadway-style productions, themed staterooms and concierge accommodations, Disney Adventure shopping experience, and more than 20 dining and lounge venues serving international and Asian-inspired cuisine.
